If you work for an employer with 20 or more employees, you have options when it comes to Medicare enrollment. Here is important information to know when deciding whether to enroll in or delay Medicare.
It’s important to be aware of what can happen if you miss your Initial Enrollment Period (IEP) for Medicare.
Most people sign up for Medicare during their 7-month Initial Enrollment Period. If you don’t, and you don’t have other coverage, you might have to wait to sign up and pay a permanent Part B late enrollment penalty that increases the longer you wait.
Your hospital's financial assistance program can help cover costs that Medicare doesn't pay for, such as deductibles, copayments, and coinsurance depending on your income and financial situation.
Link to enroll at SSA.gov. Otherwise call Social Security at 1 800-772-1213
Tell the representative you want to sign up for Medicare Parts A and B, or Part A only, or Part B only. TTY +1 800-325-0778 (hearing impaired)
If you are applying during the Special Enrollment Period, also fill out the Request for Employment Information (CMS-L564) (PDF).
If you've had a life-changing event that reduced your household income, you can ask to lower the additional amount you'll pay for Medicare Part B and Part D. Life-changing events include marriage, divorce, the death of a spouse, loss of income, and an employer settlement payment.
